Where we are
Anafonitria is the last mountain village on the route to the Shipwreck, one of the must-see destinations on Zakynthos, and is named after the village’s monastery.
History
In the historic monastery of Anafonitria, the later Saint Dionysios served as abbot. In his days as abbot (1580 AD), he hid his brother’s murderer in the monastery to save him, which is said to be the reason for his holiness. The monastery was renovated in 1669, following two decrees of the Archbishop of Venice, Francesco Morosini. Today, restoration work has been carried out on the monastery, although it no longer hosts monks.
